Police have car, not driver, in deadly hit and run

RHAWNHURST (WTXF/AP) - Police are searching for the driver who struck and killed a man in Rhawnhurst, early Sunday morning. That driver then drove off but eventually abandoned the car.

Officials said the victim -- later identified as Nilton Monteir, 51 -- was crossing the 7300 block of Castor Avenue at about 1:35am when he was hit by a white Chevy Impala traveling northbound.

He was taken to the hospital with severe head and chest trauma, but pronounced dead shortly after 4am.

The driver continued northbound on Castor, then turned eastbound on Shelmire Avenue, and abandoned the car at Horrocks Street.

The driver ran away and has not been arrested.
