Underground transformer explodes in Center City

A transformer blew at 20th and Ludlow Streets in Center City, which left damage behind Tuesday morning.

It happened around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The sheer force shattered the front windows of a local cleaners and created a day-long disruption that forced multiple businesses on the block to close early.

A PECO supervisor at the scene says at the time of the transformer explosion, there was a manhole fire on Market Street between 19th and 20th. PECO is working to determine if one incident had to do with the other. The utility company says no one was injured in either incident.

They also say the electricity remains on in that section of town and that its customers were not affected.
