Person of interest in Wayne State officer shooting arrested; $5K reward for gun offered

DETROIT (WJBK) - A person of interest in the shooting of a Wayne State police officer has been arrested.

DeAngelo Davis was arrested in the area of Michigan and Grand River at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The victim, Collin Rose, a canine officer, was wounded in the head during a stop of a man on a bicycle in the Woodbridge area of Detroit. The officer, a five-year veteran in his late 20s, is in critical condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Authorities have scheduled a press conference to tell us more about Rose's condition and the investigation. The conference is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. You can watch a livestream of the conference on our Facebook page.

Police may still be looking for a weapon in the area of Selden and Trumbull. The shooting happened in front of an apartment building at Lincoln and Brainard during a traffic stop at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

A woman who lives in the area of Brainard and Lincoln said she witnessed the shooting.

The suspect was stopped by the officer for an unknown reason. The officer was found shot after radioing for backup. The backup officer who responded to the scene also transported the victim.

"We have an American hero right now, suffering from a gunshot wound. We are asking for prayers," Detroit Police Chief James Craig said.

It is the first time in school history a Wayne State officer has been shot. The victim is engaged to be married, and was called one of the best canine officers in the country by WSU Police Chief Anthony Holt.

"He is a tremendous officer, very young, very pro-active," Holt said. "He is ingrained with the community, he reaches out to slain officer families all over the country. He is a very caring officer."
