BRIDGETON, N.J. (WTXF/AP) - Police say three suspects, two from Bridgeton and one from Salem, were arrested and charged Friday in the death of 9-year-old Jennifer Trejo who was killed in her Church St. home by a stray bullet following a shooting on Elmer St. last month.
According to police, the shooting happened near Elmer and Walnut streets, about a block away from the girl's home in Bridgeton, New Jersey. The shots struck several vehicles, and a stray bullet went through the home's rear wall and into a bedroom where it hit the girl, identified as Jennifer Trejo.
Relatives drove her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
Michael L. Elliott, 25, Leroy Frazier 3rd, 20, and Charles Gamble, 18, are facing charges that include murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and weapons offenses, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor. All three suspects were processed at Bridgeton police headquarters Friday afternoon and remanded to the Cumberland County Jail without bail.
Chief Police Michael Gaimari, Sr. said the arrests were made without incident.
“The investigation remains open and active,”Chief Police Michael Gaimari, Sr. said. “Nothing will bring Jennifer back, but the fact that those who we believe are responsible are off the street helps reassure the public that these actions will not be tolerated and those responsible held accountable.”
