Police: Man charged in girl's kidnapping, sex assault

- Police in Wilmington say they have identified and charged a 23-year-old man in connection with the kidnapping and sexually assault of a 4-year-old girl.

Daniel M. Santucci Jr., 23, is facing several charges in connection with the incident including, attempted murder, kidnapping, and unlawful sexual contact with a person under the age of 13. Santucci Jr. is also facing child pornography charges.

Police say Santucci snatched the 4-year-old from her Plum Run neighborhood, sexually assaulted her and then tossed the partially clothed girl into a deep pond. She was found by a Good Samaritan.

The girl was rushed to a hospital and underwent an evaluation that determined she was sexually assaulted.

"Santucci did not care about the victim, or her parents, or what an incident like this would do to them," Col. Vaughn Bond Jr. said, "He did not care about the fear he instilled in every parent and child throughout New Castle County."

Santucci is being held on more than $1 million bail, and was taken into custody in Florida before he was returned to the area.

A source tells FOX 29 he is being held in a special wing at the Young Correctional Facility away from general population. We are told it's for his own protection.

The investigation is ongoing.
