1 killed in hit and run following single car crash on Route 55

The female driver killed in a hit and run accident on Route 55 Friday morning has been identified. Emergency crews in Deptford, New Jersey were on the scene of the fatal crash Friday morning.

Crews responded to the single vehicle crash on Route 55 around 5:30 a.m.

FOX 29's Bob Kelly reports the car went off of the roadway and into the woods, blocking the ramp to Route 42. The crash occurred right next to the Deptford Mall off ramp.

According to New Jersey State Police per FOX 29's Steve Keeley, the 32-year-old female driver, identified as Anabel Aponte of Glasboro, did not die in the initial crash when her Kia slid off a curved section and into a tree off Route 55.

Investigators say that she was killed by a hit and run driver on Route 55 when she left her wrecked car and walked back up to the highway.

Police say she was struck by one or two vehicles.

Prior to being struck, the victim was apparently on the ground, though it is unclear why.

A driver immediately stopped, did not see anything, then left the scene. Upon realizing that someone had died on the news, the driver contacted police and is fully cooperating.

Accident re-creation investigators were initially trying to determine where she may have may have been standing when hit and if any parts or pieces of broken glass from lights may help identify the make or model of the vehicle that hit her.

No charges have been filed at this point.
