9 taken to hospital after house fire in Upper Chichester Township

Nine people have been transported to area hospitals following a house fire in Upper Chichester Township.

The fire broke out on the 3100 block of Rodney Avenue around 4 a.m. Thursday morning.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and found flames coming from the back of the home. Nine people were taken to the hospital as a result of the fire.

Fire officials did not say whether or not any of the injured were children and the extent of their injuries is not known, but most were believed to have suffered smoke inhalation.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reports the house was full of family members who were in town for a funeral on Wednesday.

Officials say the fire appears to have started in the basement of the home.

Firefighters spent about an hour and a half trying to knock the fire down and had to return after a hot spot caused a flare up.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
