Biden in Town to Discuss Cancer

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) Vice President Joe Biden landed in Philadelphia today for what he calls a moonshot: fast tracking a cure for cancer.

"My goal is that we find absolute cures but for some cancers that we get to the point that we can manage them and they become chronic diseases," said Biden.

He toured the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Penn, then met with doctors, scientists and researchers looking for help to carry out his mission.

"The goal is whatever breakthroughs we can make in 10 years, my goal is to make sure we can do it in 5 years," he said.

The Vice President says he hopes to be the catalyst for getting everyone involved in finding a cure on the same page.

"We can have the federal government and the American people step up in their contributions, financial contributions, to the fight and investment into these technologies," said the Vice President.

The mission is personal to him. He lost his son Beau to brain cancer last year. He stressed the disease is the biggest killer of millions of people around the world.

"When you are engaged with someone who you love who is fighting for their life you become aquatinted with the perimeters of what they are dealing with. And you do everything in your power to be able to learn as much about the fight that is underway as you can," said Biden.
