Brothers held for trial in shooting death of Spring Garden father

- A Philadelphia judge has ordered two brothers to be held for trial in the murder of a father who was fatally shot during an attempted carjacking in Spring Garden. The pair will be formally arraigned December 6.

Friends and family of 38-year-old Gerard “Gerry” Grandzol packed courtroom 306 at the Criminal Justice Center to show their support for the man they knew as the “Mayor” of Melon Street.

"He was a great, great man,” neighbor Pete Capolino said.

Grandzol was gunned down in front of his home on the 1500 block of Melon the night of September 7. Police say he had just parked his SUV with his 2-year-old daughter Violet in the backseat when the Roberts brothers allegedly approached and announced they wanted his wallet and his car. Within seconds, Grandzol lay on the street, dying of gunshots to the head.

Security cameras line that block one of which produced high-quality footage and sound of the incident.

A transcript was played in court in which Marvin Roberts-- the 16-year-old accused gunman-- says to Grandzol, "Turn around and give me the keys!" Grandzol responds, "I've got my 2-year old in the car.  Let me get my daughter out of the car." According to the transcript, Roberts responds, "No, don't move!" and then fires, striking Grandzol in the head.

The audio is new territory for prosecutors and defense.

“You can actually hear, not only see, but hear the victim,”  Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore said. “And how calm he was and how he gave them his wallet and how he tried to reason with them about his daughter in the backseat, only to be shot anyway."

“I have never seen a home surveillance video like tha--that was color and sound,”  Attorney F. Michael Medway said, who represents 21-year-old Maurice Roberts.  “It's a rather graphic video.  It's not very pleasant to watch and it doesn't paint a pretty picture."

Grandzol's wife was described by prosecutors as emotional, but strong, at the hearing
