Police: 14-year-old girl shot in the face in Rhawnhurst by accident

Police say a Montgomery County teenager was accidentally shot inside a Rhawnhurst home on Monday morning.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m., officers responded to the 2000 block of Glendale Avenue, where a 14-year-old girl suffered a gunshot wound to the face.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross called both the Rhawnhurst shooting and an overnight shooting in Kingsessing, which left a 16-year-old girl injured, accidents.

Naved Samuel says his 12-year-old grandson was hanging out with three other children when the incident happened. Police say detectives retrieved two handguns and two 12-gauge tactical shotguns, along with a bulletproof vest from the home.

"I think my grandson accidentally shot one of his friends," Samuel said.

"Fortunately, she's in stable condition. It appears to be an in-and-out wound--very, very lucky," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.

Police say the 14-year-old friend was shot in the face with one of several handguns the grandfather says he owns because of recent threats made to him and his family.

"We already informed the police many times about these incidents," he explained. "My neighbor called my son he said somebody's breaking in my door so we took it out to protect them."

Samuel insists that gun was not loaded.

"I don't know because I wasn't there, so police are investigating it," he said.

Detectives say they're searching for two more handguns.
