Police: Child abuse led to death of boy, 2, in Kensington

Philadelphia Police say they have ruled the death of a 2-year-old Kensington boy a homicide.

Police responded to a call for an unresponsive child on the 600 block of Clementine Street just before midnight Tuesday. When police arrived on scene, they were met by the mother and a man who were holding the child, who has been identified as Zyair Worrell

The 23-year-old woman identified herself as the Worrell's mother, and the man was identified as her 21-year-old boyfriend.

The child was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital by police where he was pronounced dead a few hours later.

An autopsy showed the boy had a fractured rib, lacerated liver, bruising of his chest wall, and an abrasion over his right eye according to authorities. Worrell also tested positive for THC. Police say the boy's mother is at the homicide unit along with her boyfriend who is not the natural father of the child.

Investigators have determined the motive to be child abuse, but no arrests have been made at this time.
