Police: Man arrested for stealing donation jar, attacking librarian in Darby

Police have arrested the man they say is responsible for assaulting a librarian at the Darby Free Library earlier this month.

Terrell Carter, 40, was arrested in connection with the July 12 attack. Police say Carter attacked librarian Joyce Anderson Taylor and stole a donation jar at the library's front desk area.

Taylor, 60, was on her way into work with her 6-year-old great-grandson when Carter allegedly attacked her.

"He see her, he grabs her, pushes her completely down the steps," said Upper Darby Police Chief Robert Smythe.

The victim was reportedly shoved so hard she wound up outside on the landing.

Police say Carter, who is a regular at the library, got away with a five-gallon donation jar intended to raise money amid the library's 275th anniversary.

"He knew the money was in there because he was always in there--probably a couple hundred dollars in there," Captain Smythe said.

Investigators say Carter has an extensive criminal history.

"A lot of it is threats and violence, so we believe he is a dangerous person," Captain Smythe said.
