Police: 3 injured after man drives into crowd in West Philadelphia

- Police say three people were injured after a man drove into a crowd of people fighting on the 5900 block of Locust Street in West Philadelphia.

"I just heard a lot of loud talking and it went on for so long that I finally got out and looked out the window,” said Carol Ricks. She rushed to her window when she heard a loud commotion outside her home on Locust Street in West Philly.  What she saw was not what she expected.

"I saw a gentleman lying in the street and a little farther up a lady sitting on the ground leaning against the car," she said.

It was around 3:30 Friday afternoon that police say a man driving a gray car came barreling down Locust Street from 60th Street and plowed into a crowd of people hitting three of them.  The driver kept going.

"There was a million police it seemed," said Ricks.

Investigators say it started when a large group of about 20 people ranging in age from their 20's to 50's got into a fight at 60th and Spruce. One group then walked to Locust Street where they were standing in the middle of the block.

"We believe someone from the other party called somebody and a male comes down Locust Street from 60th Street at a high rate of speed," said Lt. John Walker with Philadelphia Police.  The driver hit a 27-year old man, a 27-year old woman and a 52-year old woman.  Several others were lucky enough to get out of the way in time.  Police tape roped off the scene well into the night as investigators combed the block for evidence they hope will lead them to the driver.

"Could have killed somebody when you have a 3,000 pound vehicle moving at that speed with a bunch of people. Fortunately they were able to somewhat get out of the way," said Lt. Walker.
Police say the car is gray and may be an Impala.
Two of the victims, a man and a woman are in the hospital in stable condition with injuries to their upper and lower body. A third person suffered a leg injury but was treated by Medics and released.  Police aren’t sure yet what the argument was about that led to the hit and run.
