Police: Brother, sister shot while trick-or-treating in Olney

- Philadelphia police say a 5-year-old boy and his 14-year-old sister were wounded in a shooting while trick-or-treating in the city's Olney section.

It happened on the 5700 block of Hope Street around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, where a bucket filled with candy laid spilled onto the ground into the morning.

The 5-year-old was shot once in the left leg and the 14-year-old suffered a graze wound to the right leg. Both victims were taken to Einstein Hospital where they are listed in stable condition. Both are expected to survive.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Ross says the gunfire broke a bone in the 5-year-old boy's leg.

Police believe they were caught in the crossfire of two men police say were shooting at a third man as they ran down the block.

“The big issue with this is how callous somebody could be that you see the children, you know they’re trick or treating, and that you could be so evil that you don’t care that they’re standing there,” Commissioner Ross said, “You just want to shoot somebody so badly, and in this case you end up shooting two innocent children.”

Bullets also shattered the windows of a truck parked in front of the spot where the victims were walking and police say a bullet also went through the back room of a home.  No one inside was hurt. The suspects took off running. Neither weapon has been found. One of the suspects was wearing a red and white scarf over his face.
