Police to charge 16-year-old in fatal shooting of Spring Garden father as adult

- Police have decided to charge 16-year-old Marvin Roberts — who they say is responsible for the shooting death of Gerard Grandzol — as an adult.

Police arrested Marvin, and his 21-year-old brother Maurice Roberts, over the weekend for the crime. Investigators say the 16-year-old was the gunman in the shooting.

Grandzol, 38, was shot in the face in Spring Garden last week.

"Gerard Grandzol was coming home from Lemon Hill, playing Frisbee with his daughter and his dog," Homicide Unit Captain Jack Ryan said.

Police say Grandzol pulled up to his home on the block around 8 p.m. in his family SUV with his daughter and dog inside. Grandzol reportedly did not resist his attackers but told them his 2-year-old daughter was in the backseat when they demanded the keys. That's when authorities say the 16-year-old suspect shot Grandzol twice in the face.

Speaking exclusively to FOX 29, Kristen Grandzol says she is grateful police have made the arrests.

"I would just like to thank the District 9 police and homicide unit for their tireless efforts and compassion over the last few days," Kristen told FOX 29. "They've been amazing, and I'll never forget it."

"Nothing will bring Gerry back," she added. "But it gives me peace [that] justice will be served I hope."

The Captain of Homicide says the 16-year-old was carrying an illegal 9 mm pistol bought on the street.
