Police: Thieves Break into 22 Storage Units

TUCKER, Ga. - Customers at a Tucker Public Storage facility are outraged after police said 22 units were broken into.

"We were missing more than 20 washers and dyer sets and they took mattresses," said Jessica Martinez who was back at the storage facility on Lawrenceville Highway Thursday to collect the little the crooks left behind.

Adrienne Poole's unit was also broken into, her lock torn off. Poole said some of the units were empty, others vandalized.

"They had drums and they were stepped on, records were smashed, speakers were destroyed," said Poole.

Poole and Martinez believe these thefts could have possibly been prevented. Gwinnett County Police said the thefts occurred between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m. Wednesday, adding that the front gate was broken during that time and left open.

Poole said the responding officer told her the gate had been broken for 30 days.

"You will notify us for a bill," said Poole about the gate. "You will call us on the phone if we are late, but we never got any notice."

"It was wide open for a month, no one fixed it, nobody did anything to it," said Martinez. "Anybody could go in and out when they wanted."

The customers also said Public Storage would not replace the broken locks the thieves destroyed.

"They asked to either purchase another, which was $24 or $25, or you can purchase your own at a store," said Poole.

These customers said someone lives on the property and wonder how the crooks got away with so much without anyone hearing them.

Gwinnett County Police said they are investigating.
