No Gouda Deed: Teen steals shipment of cheese worth $160,000, cops say

A New Jersey teen has been arrested on charges he stole a fortune in, of all things, cheese.

Bergen County prosecutors said Thursday that Darluis Ortiz, 18, was among a group who stole pallets of Tastee Cheese products from a food warehouse late last month.

Prosecutors say the trove of imported Jamaican cheese was worth $160,000.

Moonachie police arrested Ortiz Wednesday in Paterson after a two-week investigation into the September 23 theft at La Fe foods in the town, which is about a half hour from Manhattan.

Ortiz is charged with burglary, conspiracy and possession of burglary tools. He was being held in the Bergen County jail on $150,000 bail.

In a press release, prosecutors said the investigation is ongoing, leaving open the possibility of more arrests in connection with the heist.
