Woman finds dog abandoned in trash bag in Wissahickon Valley Park

A walk in the park turned into a lifesaving mission in Philadelphia Tuesday night.

It began Tuesday morning in Philadelphia's Wissahickon Valley Park.

Barbara Adams headed into the crisp autumn morning with her pup, when something on the trail ahead caught her eye.

She spotted a garbage bag was clearly moving in the distance.

Then, she saw a little head sticking out of it.

Someone had not only dumped their dog in the park, but they had stuffed her into a garbage bag and tied it up.

Adams called the Pennsylvania SPCA which immediately sent out two humane law enforcement officers.

"In these cases, it's the first 48 hours, first few days that are the most important to ensure that the animal survives. And our goal is to make sure that not only does the animal survive but also that we find who's responsible for this horrific act of cruelty," Nicole Miller from the PSPCA explained.

The stiffest penalty for such an act under the current law is a misdemeanor.

By the way, the PSPCA has named this sweet pup Cranberry in light of thanksgiving being just two days away.

It's going to take a lot of money to nurse Cranberry back to health, and she's not out of the woods yet.
