CHERRY HILL, N.J. - You can hold the funeral march, at least for another year. Reports of the death of Black Friday are apparently premature and if you go by the good times being had by shoppers at the Cherry Hill Mall, the holiday shopping tradition's still got some life left for sure.
Rough sledding at Cherry Hill mall today. But when it's Black Friday, shopping's a contact sport, you better bring your a-game.
The mall was hopping for sure today, maybe it's a case of late onset Thanksgiving cabin fever. But despite predictions that Black Friday's dead or surveys from the National Retail Federation saying this year -- more holiday shopping will happen online than in big box stores -- Cherry hill didn't get the word…
Lisa Wolstromer, the mall's Senior Marketing Director says the measuring stick isn't shoppers, it's the bags they're carrying.
"Right, exactly I think consumers are ready to spend. And you can see there's a lot of people shopping here right now there's a lot of people with shopping bags. And that's what you really have to look at; do they have bags in their hands," says Lisa.
The number of Black Friday shoppers is actually down according to the National Retail Federation but they add that individual shoppers are spending more, which offsets things.
But the lady at the pretzel shop still makes pigs in a blanket. Ron, who's been ringing the bell for the salvation army for more than fifty years is doing his thing.
And the spirit is good here beyond question guys. But one measuring stick I use is parking. Couple of years ago you had to work to get a parking spot in the far reaches of the lots here. Today at the same time there were more spots available, make of that what you will.
