People living in the southwestern U.S. and Washington need to be aware of potential fungal storms that occur when weather events such as dust storms, high winds, and floods cause spores of the soil-dwelling Coccidioides species to release into the air. Inhalation of the spores causes Coccidioidomycosis, or Valley fever, a lung infection.

A powerful line of severe thunderstorms is pushing northeast toward Philadelphia, threatening the area with damaging winds and heavy downpours capable of producing one to two inches of rain per hour. A flash flood watch remains in effect through Monday evening as the persistent, humid storm system is expected to bring continuous rain and cooler temperatures in the 70s into Tuesday.
