Alleged drunk driver seen stumbling from car apologizes

SARASOTA, FL (FOX 13) - A man who Sarasota County deputies said was driving very drunk over the weekend told FOX 13 that he is remorseful.

The sheriff's office released helicopter video of the alleged drunk driver that they believe will scare people sober -- literally.

The infrared footage shows a car pulling into a parking lot Saturday night. Moments later, the driver attempts to get out, but clumsily falls to the ground and stumbles around. His passenger gets out and struggles to help him stand up, but is not successful and eventually winds up in a similar predicament.

Deputies said the driver is 23-year-old Aaron Proulx. He was charged with DUI and hit-and-run, but told FOX 13 Tuesday night that he is sorry and wants to get his life back together.

"I really messed up, that's what I did. I can't remember anything from the night. I was blackout drunk," Proulx said.

Deputies said Proulx had been involved in a hit-and-run crash about five miles away, which is why the helicopter was in the area. The aircraft was eventually able to direct deputies to the vehicle

"It's embarrassing I cannot remember. That is the scariest part. I could have hurt somebody, I could have killed somebody, and I would not be able to live with that," Proulx said.

The sheriff's office said Proulx had a blood alcohol level at .22 -- nearly three times the legal limit.

"I would really like to apologize to the driver I hit, first of all," Proulx said. "I would really like to apologize to the police too for my obscene behavior on the video."
