Authorities: Man threatened graduation ceremony, attempted to purchase gun

Authorities in Ocean County, New Jersey have arrested a man they say threatened to shoot students and staff at a local high school graduation.

Investigators say they were made aware of a threat against students and staff at New Egypt High School's graduation ceremony and quickly identified Matthew Vanderbeek, 19, as the suspect. Vanderbeek allegedly made the threat on social media.

A search warrant was authorized and police searched Vanderbeek's home and investigators say they were able to verify he had made the threats and also found that he had been trying to obtain a firearm.

Vanderbeek was taken into custody without incident.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office explained that there was no current threat to the Plumstead Township School District or the graduation ceremony.

Vanderbeek has been charged with terroristic threats, attempting to possess a firearm for an unlawful purpose, and related charges.
