A child was killed after a driver struck two boys with a vehicle in Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon.

What we know:

Indianapolis Metro Police received a call just after 1:30 p.m. to a neighborhood where two boys, a 9-year-old and a 5-year-old, were found lying in the street after it appeared they were hit by a vehicle.

Both boys were taken to a nearby hospital, where the 9-year-old later died from his injuries.

Dig deeper:

Police on scene of the crash interviewed neighbors and found available video footage that led them to a description of the suspect of the vehicle and the vehicle’s license plate number.

Why you should care:

Using an automated license plate reader, police were able to track the vehicle in just hours, learning the vehicle's last known location. The license plate readers were able to determine the specific location of the suspect's vehicle and officers say it was located a short time later, where they took the driver into custody.

Police say the driver was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing death, but the prosecutors will make a final determination on charges.
