Merlino due at morning bail hearing in Florida federal court

Jailed local mob boss Joey Merlino has a date in federal court in Florida.

The 54-year-old is set to appear for a bail hearing at 10am in West Palm Beach, near his Boca Raton home.

Prosecutors will argue Merlino should stay in jail until his trial.

Thursday, FBI agents arrested Merlino along with more than 40 others connected to organized crime, up and down the east coast.

The federal indictment contains charges such as racketeering, gambling, loan-sharking, arson and firearms offenses -- as well as healthcare fraud dating back to 2011.

Merlino's lawyer says he's fighting the charges, which could land him in prison for 20 years.

Merlino's most recent stint behind bars came back in early 2015 when he was found to have violated terms of his supervised release by failing to report an encounter with a former associate.

The reputed former head of Philadelphia's La Cosa Nostra served four months for the violation.
