Police are investigating after a man was shot in the drive-thru of a Fishtown McDonald's overnight.

The 24-hour McDonald's on Girard Avenue is bustling with customers all hours of the day and night.

"Me and my wife were in and out of there last night. Seemed like a normal night," said Barry Ippolito.

A few hours after Ippolito went home, police say a fight broke out between two drivers in the drive-thru lane. One of them pulled out a gun, opened fire and drove away. A 27-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the chest.

"It's scary. Makes me not want to go there with my wife. Makes me be more cautious, I guess," Ippolito said.

The McDonald's is within blocks of Girard Avenue hotspots, like Garage, Johnny Brenda's and Sancho Pistolas, all packed with people on Saturday nights until the bars shut down Sunday mornings. The shooting at McDonald's happened around 1:30 a.m.

"There's a lot of foot traffic every Saturday night. A lot of bars around here," said one concerned neighbor.

That man said he was out in the area Saturday not long before the shooting. Neighbor Vanessa Sundra said she often sees questionable crowds hanging on the block at night. She tries to avoid the area altogether, especially if she's by herself.

"Generally, the rest of Fishtown I can advocate. It's an incredibly safe area. I love living here. But, it's just that little pocket between McDonald's and El that can be a little sketchy at night," Sundra said.

Sundra and others said the shooting doesn't surprise them. The shooting serves as a reminder to always keep up one's guard.

"You always wanna be cautious, always walk around with people," Sundra stated.

There are several cameras in the area which should help police in their investigation.
