SNAP BENEFIT CHANGES | Some states ban soda, candy purchases
New restrictions on what can be purchased with SNAP benefits are now in effect in several states. Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah and West Virginia have implemented bans on using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to buy soda and candy. The changes follow encouragement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which has urged states to seek waivers allowing tighter restrictions on SNAP-eligible foods. The move comes amid broader changes affecting consumers, including the U.S. Mint’s recent decision to stop producing pennies, prompting some businesses to round cash transactions to the nearest nickel when exact change is unavailable. Supporters of the SNAP restrictions say the changes ensure taxpayer dollars are used for essential food purchases, while critics argue they limit choice for low-income families.
