Delaware primary election: Check live results for Senate, House races

DELAWARE - Polls across Delaware have closed as voters cast ballots in the 2026 Primary Election. Polls were open statewide Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters in line by 8 p.m. were still able to cast their ballot. Both Democratic and Republican primaries featured competitive races for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and several state offices.

What we know:

Several high-stakes positions appeared on the ballot Tuesday, depending on voters’ districts and party affiliation. 

Ballots included contested primaries for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, State Attorney General and several other state and county offices. 

Both Democratic and Republican primaries were on the ballot for one of Delaware's seats in the U.S. Senate, with a four-candidate field on the Democratic side, including a 16-year incumbent, and two Republican candidates, including a former state senator.

In addition to the U.S. Senate race, the state held a Republican primary for its sole seat in the House of Representatives. Three Republicans competed for the party's nomination. Other races on the ballot included State Senate, State Representative, State Treasurer and county offices.

Delaware uses a closed primary system, so only Democrats could vote in the Democratic Primary and only Republicans could vote in the Republican Primary. Voters who registered through the DMV without choosing a party could select an affiliation up to and including Tuesday. However, the registration and party-change window closed earlier for all other voters.

Election officials will begin tallying the votes now that the polls are closed.

Delaware Democratic Primary Results 2026

Incumbent Democrat Chris Coons won the Senate primary, beating three other candidates for his party's nomination, the Associated Press reported. 

On the Republican side, former State Senator Michael Katz secured the nomination and will run against Coon in the November general election.

For the U.S. House race, Republicans chose teacher and author Dr. Joseph Arminio as their nominee. He will face Democrat Sarah McBride, who is running unopposed, according to election reports.

Voters focus on community and economic needs

What they're saying:

"I wanted to exercise my vote because a lot of things are not going right, so I wanted to express my voice vote for a change and change for the better," said Art Gatwood, who voted at the New Castle Library Bear Branch.

"Try to get these gas prices down and the economy and everything," said Jerolyn Rice. "Its important for everyone to vote. If you have time come out. Every vote is important."

Tina Marie Reinsfelder raised concerns about electricity costs and data center oversight. "The electric rates in the state of Delaware they just doubled in the past year. Most of our expendable cash is going toward utilities and transportation when it should be going to the comfort of your home," she said."Data centers should be regulated and I think that they should be regulated with true enforcements to be held to hold them accountable for what their actions are." 

Reinsfelder also noted, "I think its really important for citizens to have their voices heard and you can't vote for you candidate if they don't get in."
