WEST PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Firefighters are battling brutal conditions around the region. SkyFOX showed smoke and flames pouring out of a rowhome in West Philadelphia as dozens of firefighters raced to get the fire under control.
"I never seen so much smoke in all my life. You couldn't see nothing over there- it was so smoky," neighbor Laura Stewart said.
Stewart has lived in the 4900 block of Chestnut for 50 years. On Friday, she saw firefighters across the street from her house doing what they do in the most miserable of conditions.
Nearly a hundred Philadelphia firefighters were on the scene late Friday morning battling the heat and the cold in brutal conditions.
"The temperature out here has made the conditions very tough. Our gear weighs about a hundred pounds. We have members in the back that are totally covered in ice right now," Philadelphia Fire Department Commissioner Gary Loesch said.
The report came in of a person trapped, but everyone inside the two story building was able to get out. Two firefighters though initially needed help.
Air this cold can freeze the water in fire hydrants. It forces crews to maneuver on ladders differently and makes walking on a roof that much more treacherous.
Firefighters quickly got the upper hand and no on was seriously hurt.
