Man dies while in custody of SEPTA police

A man in custody of SEPTA police died Saturday morning after going into cardiac arrest in front of police headquarters in North Philadelphia.

It happened around 10 a.m. outside of the Philadelphia Police Department's 24th District headquarters on Whitaker Avenue.

The 39-year-old man was being transported to the East Detective Division after a reported theft from Walgreens when he coded.

Officials say SEPTA oolice and the 25th District initiated CPR, administered Narcan and an AED in an effort to revive the man until medics arrived.

SEPTA officers reportedly activated their body cameras during the incident.

The man was pronounced dead a short time later at Temple University Hospital - Episcopal Campus.

Authorities have yet to identify the deceased.
