School resource officer uses stun gun on teen boy in Delaware

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) -- A Delaware high school student who police say fought with two staff member was shot with a stun gun.

Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe tells news outlets that the 17-year-old boy failed to comply with the Sussex Central High School resource officer's verbal commands Monday, and began striking, biting and grabbing the officer's gun belt.

Indian River School District Superintendent Mark Steele says "it became necessary" for the officer to deploy the stun gun to subdue the student. The student was hospitalized for an evaluation, and unspecified charges are pending. Steele commended the officers and staff members for their actions.

The student did not have a weapon during the exchange.

State police are investigating. Jaffe says the sensitivity of the case restricts the information that can be released.
