New bus routes for SEPTA passengers start Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - SEPTA rolled out Phase 1 of its first full-scale bus system overhaul in 63 years Sunday, bringing permanent route cuts, new corridors and schedule changes to Philadelphia-area commuters.

Effective Sunday, SEPTA has permanently eliminated seven bus routes:
- 35
- 47M
- 62
- 78
- 80
- 89
- 106
Riders who previously depended on these lines will need to secure alternative transit options before setting out for their Monday morning travel, according to the transit authority.
New corridors and route extensions
A press release put out by SEPTA last week also detailed new corridors and route extensions:
- Route 72 (New): Establishes a fresh east-west link along Cheltenham Avenue, connecting Cedarbrook Plaza directly to the Frankford Transit Center.
- Route 76 (New): Provides a north-south connection along G Street, Frankford Avenue and Columbus Boulevard to join Rising Sun Loop with Columbus Commons via Pier 70.
- Route 45 (Extended): Expands coverage directly into the Navy Yard, operating seven days a week.
- Route 79 (Extended): Reaches farther across South and West Philadelphia to connect directly to 40th Street Station on the Market-Frankford Line.

Commuters will also encounter updated bus stop signage featuring standardized layouts, reflective bus icons to enhance safety after dark and distinct "frequent red" indicators identifying lines that arrive every 15 minutes or faster, according to a release.
Digital transit services—including the SEPTA mobile app, SEPTA.org and third-party platforms like Apple Maps, Google Maps and Transit—have also transitioned to the updated schedules.
