UD says Noose-Like Items Found on Campus Were 'Remnants of Lanterns'

Students thought they found nooses on campus at the University of Delaware Tuesday night. Now the school is saying that the items were actually the remains of paper lanterns from an earlier event.

University of Delaware police say that 3 bent hangers and twine resembling nooses were found outside of Mitchell hall Tuesday. Their appearance was originally being investigated as a hate crime.

Viewer and University of Delaware student Ayanna Gill sent us a photo of what school officials are now calling leftover decorations from an event last month.

Gill told FOX 29 that on Monday night she and about 100 other students held a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest outside Mitchell hall. Then, about 24 hours later, the students stumbled across the decorations located at the same site as the protest.

A statement released by the University Wednesday morning claimed that the noose-like items were the "remnants of paper lanterns."
