Why was the SEPTA Regional Rail shutdown Thursday?

Chaos ensued in the Philadelphia area Thursday after power outages led to all Regional Rail trains to be temporarily suspended Thursday.

SEPTA Regional Rail train cancellations caused major issues in the Philadelphia area Thursday. 

What we know:

At around 3 p.m. reports came in of at least two Regional Rail suspensions. 

At 3:44 p.m. a SEPTA spokesperson confirmed all Regional Rail trains were temporarily suspended. 

SEPTA Director of Media Relations, Andrew Busch, says a PECO power outage impacted the signal system twice Thursday afternoon. 

The signal system is back and service has resumed with significant delays. 

The Trenton Line is suspended due to an Amtrak train striking a person in the tracks near Holmesburg, officials say.

SEPTA is advising riders to find other alternative routes.

According to SEPTA, Northbound service from Suburban Station to Chestnut Hill East, Fox Chase, Doylestown, Norristown, Warminster, West Trenton is resuming operations with delays of 60 minutes or more.

Service for Chestnut Hill East, Fox Chase, Doylestown, Norristown, Warminster, and West Trenton is operating with significant delays of 30 minutes or more.

SEPTA Regional Rail shutdown | LIVE FOX 29 Behind The News

FOX 29's Steve Keeley is live at Suburban Station after SEPTA temporarily suspended Regional Rail service.

PECO sent FOX 29 the following statement regarding the issue: 

"At approximately 2:30 p.m., a third-party contractor working in the area of 18th and Chestnut streets damaged an underground electric cable, causing a temporary outage affecting 74 customers. PECO crews quickly responded to the outage, repairs were made, and service was restored in less than 30 minutes."
