Body found in Feltonville basement identified as missing NY woman

Police have confirmed that the decomposed body found in a Feltonville basement Sunday is that of 50-year-old Vianelba Tavera, who was previously reported missing from New York.

The man who family members identified as Tavera's boyfriend is in custody after being found driving her sport-utility vehicle in Virginia.

Detectives discovered Tavera's body after neighbors reported a suspicious odor emitting from a home on the 400 block of West Roosevelt Boulevard.

The medical examiner confirmed that the mother of five, who is from the Bronx, was killed by a gunshot wound to the head. Her manner of death was declared a homicide.

Tavera was last heard from on July 28 when she left to visit her boyfriend in Philadelphia. After she was reported missing, her SUV was stopped by Fairfax police on July 30. Responding officers arrested 38-year-old Luis Negron-Martinez for the theft of Tavera's car. A 9mm handgun was also recovered.

Family members say Negron-Martinez was Tavera's long-distance boyfriend.

Luis Negron-Martinez remains in the custody of Fairfax County Police Department.
