wo children were bitten by a dog while playing outside their home Thursday evening in the Fairhill neighborhood, according to Philadelphia police.

What we know:

Police say the attack happened just after 6:00 p.m. on the 3300 block of North Water Street.

Officers found a 3-year-old boy with two bites on his arm and one on his leg, and a 12-year-old girl with severe bites to her face and arm.

Investigators say the girl lost a tooth from the bite to her face and both children were bleeding heavily.

Both children were transported to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said, "They were on the sidewalk playing right in front of their house and their mother was sitting on the porch watching them when a Pit bull from the house across the street ran out of the front door of the property, ran across the street and for no apparent reason began to bite both of these children."

Police say the dog was not on a leash and ran back into its house after the attack, where it was locked in a cage.

The attack happened in front of the children's home while their mother was watching from the porch, according to police.

Police responded quickly to the 911 call and medics arrived to help the children, according to investigators.

SKYFOX was live over the scene on North Water Street.

What we don't know:

Police have not said if the dog’s owner will face any charges or what will happen to the dog. The current condition of the children has not been released.
