KILAUEA VOLCANO, Hawaii (WTXF) - Scientists are warning the lava delta of the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii -- where the lava flow enters the sea -- is at risk of collapse as the summit of the lava lake continues to drop.
They released timelapse video showing eight photos taken in the eight days between July 6 and July 13, showing the lava delta at Kilauea Volcano's Kamokuna ocean entry. The video also shows the front of the delta subsiding with cracks starting to appear.
Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey wrote, "Rockfalls from the Overlook crater walls have been frequent over the past two days, due to the lowering lava level, and these collapses trigger spattering in the lake. The spattering in this telephoto image created a local sink in the lake, causing surrounding crust to plunge towards the spattering."
