Woman's boyfriend accused of beating her 2-year-old daughter to death in Philly
A 21-year-old man faces murder charges in the tragic death of a 2-year-old girl in South Philadelphia. Prosecutors say Sean Hernandez, also known as Rafi Gorham, is accused of brutally beating 2-year-old Key’Monnie Bean inside a South Philadelphia home.
PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia man is facing murder charges after prosecutors say he beat his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter to death earlier this month.
The backstory:
Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to a home on Beachwood Street the night of Dec. 8 for reports of an unresponsive child.
Prosecutors say 2-year-old Key'Monnie Bean was beaten to death by her mother's boyfriend, 21-year-old Sean Hernandez.
Police found 2-year-old Key'Monnie Bean unresponsive on the basement floor and placed her on a bed where officers immediately began performing CPR.
Key'Monnie was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where she was pronounced dead just after 9:30 p.m.
What we know:
Sean Hernandez, who police say also goes by Raafi Gorham, was arrested and charged with murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and weapons crimes.
Anthony Lowrie, 21, and Alycia McNeill, 20, were also arrested on Wednesday and charged with obstruction of justice and unsworn falsifying.
Investigators say Hernandez is the boyfriend of the child's mother.
Assistant District Attorney Ashley Toczylowski stated that Key’Monnie showed signs of a severe beating, with indications of objects being used.
There is also preliminary information suggesting her airway may have been compromised, possibly indicating suffocation.
Prosecutors revealed that the girl's mother was present in the home during the incident but has not been charged.
District Attorney Larry Krasner described the incident as a brutal beating that led to the child's death.
What they're saying:
District Attorney Krasner commented on the tragic case on Thursday, calling it "a tremendous loss."
"We should be outraged about what happened to this 2-year-old," Krasner told reporters.
Toczylowski mentioned that while the assault occurred on Dec. 8, there are indications that Key’Monnie may have endured ongoing abuse.
The girl's father has expressed his grief on Facebook, referring to her as his "sunshine."
