Bystander injured after police chase leads to fiery crash in North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Three men are in custody and one woman has been hospitalized after a mugging lead to a police chase and a fiery crash on Thursday night in North Philadelphia.
Police say the four men held up a woman at gunpoint on the 1900 block of North 7th Street. Police pursued the vehicle after the men tried to speed away from the scene.
The chase ended when the men blew through the red light on Broad Street and Allegheny Avenue and were struck by an SUV.
The car hopped the curb and struck 25-year-old Barbara Brooks, who was sitting on the steps of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Cell phone video shows Brooks being pulled back from the burning car by police while officers grapple with one of the alleged suspects on the sidewalk.
"It's a hurt feeling to see my sibling get dragged and almost died on Broad and Allegheny," said Brooks' sister Shaakira Wade.
Brooks was transported to Temple Hospital where she had one leg amputated. Brooks' family says the remaining leg is broken.
Brooks remains sedated at the hospital and will require multiple operations, according to her family.
"They're trying to save her other leg," said Brooks' sister, Sharon Melendez. "I'm just hoping everything works out for her and she just stays here with us."
