Crews respond to water rescue in Delaware River near Delran
First responders are conducting an active water rescue operation in Delran, Burlington County, following an incident reported near the Delaware River.
DELRAN, N.J. - First responders are continuing search and recovery operations in the Delaware River after an adult woman went missing after rescuing a young girl from the water at Amico Island Park on Monday afternoon.
What we know:
According to the Delran Police Department, officers responded to the park at 81 Norman Avenue at 3:52 p.m. following reports of two potential drowning victims.
Investigators determined that an adult woman entered the Delaware River to save a juvenile girl struggling in the water.
The woman successfully pushed the young girl toward the bank, where bystanders pulled the child safely onto the shore, investigators say. However, during the rescue, the woman went underwater and failed to resurface.
What we don't know:
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the missing woman or the rescued child, nor have they confirmed what initially caused the young girl to struggle in the water.
What's next:
A multi-agency search is underway involving the Delran Police Department, Delran Fire Department, Delran Emergency Squad, New Jersey State Police, Philadelphia Police Department and the Camden County Dive Team.
Specialized units, including Camden County’s Mobile Drone Unit, are also deploying watercraft and wading teams with ropes along the waterway to locate the woman.
