Mother mourns the loss of 4-year-old son who died after falling onto glass-framed photo

Authorities say a 4-year-old boy was killed when he fell onto a glass-framed photo at his family's Philadelphia home, spraying the room with chards that struck him in the abdomen.

The accident occurred Wednesday afternoon.

The boy's mother, Amanda Velez, identified him to FOX 29 as Adrian Ortega.

She says she went to use the bathroom and in less than a minute, Adrian picked up a frame they had on the ground due to remodeling, and slipped and fell on it.

"I heard a loud bang and the glass shatter, I heard my youngest daughter, who's 2 years old, screaming," Velez says. "And I heard my son say, 'Mommy!' so I immediately rushed to the room."

Velez says she performed CPR on him and rushed him to the hospital with other family members. She says doctors tried to stabilize him to get him into surgery, but they were unable to.

"He had a whole life ahead of him, I would do anything to give my life for my son to be here," she says. "He told me he wanted to be a firefighter because they save people."

Philadelphia Police say the Medical Examiner's Office ruled the manner of death accidental and the cause of death to be a sharp injury to the abdomen.

They say they are still investigating, but charges are unlikely.

Velez says family members and friends will gather outside their home on North Reese Street for a candlelight vigil on Thursday night.

They have also organized a GoFundMe to help pay for funeral costs.
