Tracking Jose: Hurricane to indirectly impact area Tuesday, Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Hurricane Jose continues to push through the Atlantic Ocean as it draws closer and closer to the east coast as a Category 1 Hurricane.

Jose weakened a bit on Monday off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, but remained a Category 1 with maximum sustained wind speeds of 75 mph. The system continues to move North at about 9 mph.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been discontinued for the Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches. The strongest winds will stay off shore.

Shore towns can likely expect minor to moderate coastal flooding at times of high tide. Wave swells could reach as high as 10 feet or more on Tuesday, subsiding to about 5 feet by Wednesday.

In terms of rain, our area should only expect about an inch or two as the outer bands of Jose are expected to reach the area.

Beach erosion will be possible, and dangerous rip currents will continue to be a concern down the shore.

Even after Jose moves north of our area, meteorologists will be watching him closely as some models show the storm looping back around.

Should Jose pass by without much impact, attention will likely turn back to the south and the path of Category 3 Hurricane Maria, as it barrels over several islands that were pummeled by Irma. Any local impact from Maria would not come until next week.
