2 Delaware men charged with possession of over 11 pounds of marijuana, multiple firearms
NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DE (WTXF) - Police in Delaware arrested two Newark men Wednesday for possession of more than 11 pounds of marijuana, possession of multiple firearms, and wearing body armor.
According to a press release from New Castle County Police, officers responded to the unit block of Tudor Hall in the Foxwood Apartments on Wednesday at 1:20 a.m. to reports of possible shots fired.
The person who called 911 said that a white Ford Focus fled the area after shots were heard.
Multiple patrol units responded to the area, but could not find anyone injured or a scene.
At 2:48 a.m., a call for a suspicious person came in for the unit block of Sussex Hall.
The caller gave a description of the suspicious person and said that a weapon may be involved.
While responding to this call, police saw a white Ford Focus leaving the area with its light off.
An officer conducted a vehicle stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver, 22-year-old Torren McCarthy, and the passenger, 28-year-old Samuel Call.
According to the press release, officers observed several suspicious behaviors with the two and investigated their purpose of being in the complex further.
During that time, officers saw that McCarthy was wearing a bulletproof vest and under the passenger seat found a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
They continued searching the vehicle and found an additional loaded 12-gauge shotgun and another bulletproof vest in the trunk.
A subsequent, more extensive search of the vehicle revealed more than $1,200 in suspected drug proceeds.
One of the officers with the assistance of detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit, authored and executed multiple search warrants on both McCarthy's and Call's apartments.
In Call's apartment in the unit block of Sussex Hall, officials found more than 3 pounds of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and more than $3,000 in suspected drug proceeds. They also found two additional firearms.
In McCarthy's apartment, located in the unit block of Scholar Drive in Newark, officials found more than 8 pounds of marijuana packaged for sale.
Call was charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substances (tier 2 quantity), three counts of possession of a weapon by a person prohibited, conspiracy in the second degree, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held at Howard Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $57,100 cash bail.
McCarthy was charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance (Tier 3 quantity), wearing body armor during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and conspiracy in the second degree. He was committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $82,000.00 cash bail.
