2 people rescued, 7 puppies killed in Frankford fire

Officials say two people and two dogs were rescued, but seven puppies were killed in a fire on the 4700 block of North Penn Street in Frankford.

The fire broke out around 5 p.m. Monday.

Dionna Melvin grabbed a few seconds of video on her phone.

"We seen all the smoke coming out of the building. People were screaming. The man was outside screaming that his wife was trapped inside," she told FOX 29.

Firefighters arrived and immediately went into lifesaving action. Lisa Jabbar watched and prayed for a good outcome.

"They got her. They got that lady out of there They saved her life because she was stuck in that room," she explained.

Witnesses say two dogs ran from the building. Neighbors were able to grab the female who just days before had given birth to a litter of puppies. The puppies did not survive.

"Unfortunately, on this call when we arrived, the adult dogs made it out, but unfortunately the seven puppies did not," Red Paws volunteer Ollie McDonough said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
