COPY-Mummers' Mardi Gras celebration set for Saturday in Philly
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The group whose New Year's parade has been dubbed Philadelphia's Mardi Gras is putting on a weather-delayed Mardi Gras show of its own.
The Mummers say all 17 string bands from its annual Jan. 1 parade will march Saturday down Main Street in the city's vibrant Manayunk neighborhood.
Organizers say the free event from noon to 4 p.m. will give spectators an up close look at the colorfully costumed bands while keeping the Mummers tradition alive.
Parade goers can also purchase $10 wristbands for access to additional events framed around the celebration. Proceeds help keep the bands afloat.
The Manayunk celebration follows a smaller event with Mummers bands last year in Northern Liberties.
The Mummers were scheduled to march last Sunday, but remnants of a snowstorm forced a postponement.
