One country protecting Rio athletes with anti-Zika condoms

Australia's athletes heading to Rio in August are going to be getting some extra protection - in the Olympic Village - in the form of anti-Zika condoms.

Dual Protect VivaGel is reportedly the world's only antiviral condom. Its maker says the physical barrier provides primary protection but the lubricant contains the antiviral agent VivaGel.

The company that makes VivaGel says it has shown "near-complete antiviral protection against Zika virus in laboratory studies at levels significantly below the concentration in the Dual Protect™ condom."

Zika is commonly spread by mosquitoes and can also be contracted through sexual contact.

For the record, VivaGel also protects against the spread of HIV, HSV (genital herpes) and HPV (human papillomavirus), which are viruses that cause sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
