Oprah commits $2 million to Puerto Rico relief

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is donating $2 million to aid in the revitalization of Puerto Rico.

The money is going to the Hispanic Federation and the Flamboyan Arts Fund.

A $1 million will go to the Hispanic Federation's UNIDOS Disaster Relief & Recovery Program to Support Puerto Rico to help the organization continue to develop and implement long-term needs.

The other million donation will go to the Flamboyan Arts Fund to ensure that the island's rich heritage of arts, culture and creative development are not lost.

"I was so moved by Lin-Manuel Miranda's commitment to bring 'Hamilton' to Puerto Rico and support the community that served him growing up that I wanted to join in the revitalization efforts of an island so rich in culture, beauty and heritage," Winfrey said in a statement. "The needs of Puerto Rico and our fellow American citizens following the tragic hurricanes are still very real, and the work that has already been done by the Hispanic Federation, Flamboyan Arts Fund and other organizations on and off the island is long from over."

Miranda is the creator of The Flamboyan Arts Fund.

The goal of the Hispanic Federation's UNIDOS Disaster Relief and Recovery Program is to serve the immediate and long-term needs of families and communities in Puerto Rico and has delivered emergency relief aid to 78 communities hard-hit by Hurricane Maria.
