Police: Attempted robber shot in North Philadelphia
NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) Philadelphia Police are investigating an attempted robbery that resulted in a shooting in North Philadelphia.
It happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday on Broad Street and Allegheny Avenue.
According to police, a 24-year-old victim and witness stopped at a corner store on Broad and Allegheny to buy a drink.
When they parked, the victim was approached by a male asking him if he wanted to purchase narcotics.
The victim ignored the male, and the male walked away.
Then, the male's friends began to walk towards the victim's car, with one leaning over the hood. The other males then surrounded the vehicle.
One of the males went to the driver's side door and opened it, and the victim was able to see a gun in the male's waistband.
The victim pulled out his handgun and fired once at the male. The male went back, and the male on the hood got off the vehicle. Then, the victim drove across the street and went into the McDonald's parking lot as he called 911.
The males that previously surrounded the victim began to run across the street to the victim and witness, making the victim drive eastbound on Allegheny to escape.
The victim drove two blocks before coming back to the area.
When the victim came back just seconds later, he located uniformed police on the scene and told them what had just happened.
The victim explained that he has a permit to carry and showed the officers his permit and the weapon.
The witness also stated the same facts to police, but did not see the gun in the male's waistband who had opened the victim's door.
Police confiscated video/audio recorder from the victim's vehicle to be viewed, but was unable to be viewed at the time due to software issues.
At 8:43 p.m., police responded to Temple Hospital for a gunshot victim.
The 23-year-old victim, now known as the defendant, had gunshot wounds to both legs. He told police that he was at the intersection of Broad and Allegheny with friends.
He said that a male in a black vehicle struck one of his friends with his vehicle so he ran up to the car and opened the driver's side door trying to get at the male. Once the driver's side door was open, the defendant heard a gunshot.
The defendant went backwards after the shot and ran across the street towards the McDonald's parking lot where he says he fainted.
Police say the next thing the defendant remembers is being in a vehicle going to the hospital.
The defendant has four holes - 2 in each leg - that could have resulted from one gunshot - through and through both legs - according to a doctor at Temple Hospital.
He is in good condition.
