The school was placed on lockdown following the incident.
Lee Whack, a spokesman with the School District of Philadelphia, released the following statement:
"It is completely unacceptable any time a student brings a weapon to school. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. On Wednesday the principal at General George A. McCall Elementary School was informed that a student was likely in possession of a loaded gun. She took immediate action. The Philadelphia Police Department was called and the school was placed on lockdown immediately. The gun was removed from the school without incident.
