Turban-wearing model won't go home until airline apologizes
(STORYFUL) - American actor and model Waris Ahluwalia claims he was not allowed to board an Aeromexico flight to New York, where he was hoping to attend the start of New York Fashion Week, because of his turban.
Ahluwalia, who is Sikh, posted Instagram updates on his situation February 8, and used the hashtag #FearIsAnOpportunityToEducate.
In an interview with Quartz, Ahluwalia explained that he was asked to remove his turban for a third security screening and, when he refused, he was not allowed get on his plane.
Ahluwalia also decided not to board a flight until the airline agreed to make a public apology and set up training employees about the Sikh religion and how to treat passengers with religious traditions with respect and understanding.
In an Instagram update, Ahluwalia wrote that "no traveler should be subjected to what I was today."
Aeromexico published an apology to Ahluwalia on its site Tuesday. Ahluwalia has not yet publicly responded.
