Va. father finds 2-year-old son left unattended outside at daycare
CENTREVILLE, Va. - A father said his 2-year-old son was left unsupervised and alone on a playground Wednesday at a child development center in Centreville.
Randolph Wilkinson told FOX 5 he came to pick up his son and spotted the toddler. He pulled out his cell phone and recorded his son with no adults in sight. Now, he is demanding answers.
"I go to pick him up from daycare and then I park the car," he said. "I happen to look over to the playground and he's all by himself. There's nobody else on the playground with him. So my 2-year-old son is unsupervised on the playground all by himself. Nobody else is around."
He said the video was taken shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olive Baptist Church's Child Development Center.
"I go inside the school, I ring in and some lady I've never seen before, she opens the door for me, and then I walk straight into the classroom and [I see] kids sitting down settled," said Wilkinson.
What Wilkinson said happened next would be alarming to any parent.
"I see the director right there and she looks right at me and she says my son's name [and says] 'Your dad is here,'" said Wilkinson. "She's looking around, darting everywhere and she says, 'Where is he?' And then I make a beeline straight to the door so I can get to the playground and I said he's outside."
We called the child development center's director. Her staff took a message and we are still awaiting a response.
Wilkinson called the Fairfax County Child Protective Services to complain about the incident.
"The director comes in there and she was apologizing saying, 'I'm sorry, I don't know how this happened,' and I told them this cannot happen ever, ever again, and now it won't because he won't be going to that school any longer," Wilkinson said.
